Culinary and Visual Art Combine with Top Chicago Chefs and Artists on Thursday, April 14, 2016 at Venue One

CHICAGO—Nobody will go hungry when Chicago Artists Coalition (CAC)’s Starving Artist benefit returns Thursday, April 14, 2016. More than 500 guests will be treated to decadent bites while immersed in a uniquely designed space at Venue One (1034 W. Randolph). This year’s silent auction, hosted online by Paddle 8, allows guests the chance to own work from more than 20 noted Chicago artists. All proceeds from the event support CAC, providing educational resources, exhibitions, opportunities and networks for Chicago artists of all disciplines. Tickets (starting at $50) are on sale now at

“We are thrilled to welcome the return of one of the most anticipated events in Chicago’s art community,” said Executive Director Caroline Older. “Starving Artist highlights the talents of Chicago’s emerging artists, showcases the work of its notable chefs and brings together artists, art lovers and food enthusiasts for an outstanding party—all while celebrating CAC’s commitment to building Chicago’s creative marketplace.”


Environmental Encroachment

The event begins at 5:30 p.m. with a special VIP reception at CAC (217 N Carpenter St). Guests will mix and mingle while enjoying delicious bites by Lula Café chef/owner Jason Hammel. Hosted by Christie’s, a live auction featuring a brand-new piece of work by famed Chicago artist Hebru Brantley will kick-off the evening as well as a “special” performance by Environmental Encroachment with a few surprises in store.

starvingartists-624x415The party continues at 7:00 p.m. at Venue One, where the art of food comes to life as some of the city’s top chefs craft innovative dishes that will showcase their unique artistic culinary talents. Featured chefs include Evan Behmer of Mercat a la Planxa, Michael Coté of Balena, Shawn Doolin of Venue One,Nathan Sears of The Radler and a noted chef from Piccolo Sogno. In addition, Pork and Mindy’s will provide BBQ sliders, a food truck from Eastman Egg will make an appearance and Garrett’s Popcorn,Mariano’s, Scone City and Vosges Chocolates will all supply sweet treats for dessert.

The incredible food will be complimented by a uniquely designed space from artist Tori Terzakis as well as immersive artistic experiences created by Leonard Suryajaya.

This year, a robust online auction hosted by Paddle 8 will be live throughout the evening, featuring the work of past and present CAC resident artists and friends of CAC. Featured artists include David Alekhuogie, Aimee Beaubien, Iris Bernblun, Suzette Bross, Patty Carroll, Barbara Crane, Alejandro Figueredo Diaz-Perera, Karoline Gnatowski, Andy Hall, Sabina Ott, John Preus, Scott Reeder, Justus Roe, Matt Siber and Jessica Tampas. The auction will go live prior to the event on March 31.

For the fourth year, a portion of ticket sales will fund CAC’s annual MAKER Grant, unrestricted $3000 and $1000 funds that recognize two exceptional artists and support the advancement of their artistic careers. Proceeds raised at Starving Artist for the grant will also be matched by artist-run design collaborative OtherPeoplesPixels. Past recipients include Jeremiah Hulsebos-Spofford, Samantha Hill, John Preus, Maria Gaspar, Mary Patten and David Leggett. 2016 MAKER Grant recipients will be announced at Starving Artist.

Head of retail at Google Ted Souder and Midwest Managing Director at Christie’s Lisa Cavanaugh will serve as the 2016 Starving Artist Co-Chairs. Host committee members include Heather Becker, Suzette Bulley, Michael Darling, Alejandro Figueredo Diaz-Perera, Carol Fox, Todd Heiser, Claudine Isé, Pia Johnson, Tony Karman, Jay Owen, Carmelita Tiu, Cheryl Skender and Tricia van Eck.
